New Shops on Bedford Street

The other day I noticed two new shops have opened on Bedford Street. Downtown Golf which has the look and feel of a pro shop with really friendly proprietors Max Miller & Paul Ferrone. Located at 125 Bedford Street next to Tigin's Irish Pub, these talented operators offer golf lessons starting at $50.00 with the latest technical equipment to analyze your swing. A great Valentine's Day gift I was thinking! Another specialty of Downtown Golf is the "while you wait" club fitting services performed at their on-site lab. For this service they have a nationwide following. Golf clothing and accessories are nicely arranged throughout the store. Corporate outings and junior programs are also available at Downtown Golf. Store hours are 10am-6pm weekdays and 9am-5pm on Saturdays, so stop in and introduce yourself to Paul & Max. For more information or call (203) 359-GOLF, toll free 1-866-359-4659.

Across the street is a new gallery which opened in November called Artistic Hand Blown Glass. A one of a kind store, this colorful gallery offers a wide selection of hand blown glass, the largest collection found on the east coast. From hand blown lamps to perfume bottles, its a terrific place to find a unique gift. The whimsical salt & pepper shakers in all kinds of animal shapes are surely getting a following. Owner Anthony Sindoni & his wife Karen are friendly and extremely well educated on the artists they represent in the gallery. Located at 168 Bedford Street next to Schakolad Chocolate Factory with hours from 11am-7pm, every day but Sunday. For more information or call (203) 324-4006.

Republic Grill—open to the public

I just got back from a great lunch. It was a warm day, my friend Maryann suggested we take a leisurely walk down Bedford Street. Earlier this week a new Asian restaurant, Republic Grill, 235 Bedford St, opened across from the Avon Theatre. So, we figured we’d go check it out. What a great surprise. It is a nice size place, and the earthly-toned decor and subdued music set the mood for a peaceful and relaxing lunch. We took a table next to the wall. The service couldn’t be better. There were at least 3 different people taking care of our table at a time. It was super efficient. We started with a plate of assorted sushi: Tuna on a crispy wafer, an octopus/seafood seaweed salad, and special California roll tempura. I never had crunchy tempura sushi before, and it won me over. I loved it. Had a huge bowl of miso soup, and an order of teriyaki salmon. Super fresh. More than just delicious— outstandingly scrumptious. Maryann had a two-roll sushi lunch which was skillfully placed on a serving plate in front of her, like a work of fine art. She enjoyed her lunch a great deal, as well as I.

Afterwards, we took a stroll over the Ferguson Library. The Friends Book Store had some great used cookbooks for sale, which I picked up a great one titled Chocolate by Nick Malgieri. Maryann checked out some current mags.

I am so glad she invited me out to lunch today. Lunch in Stamford Downtown was quite a treat this afternoon.

napa with a "new" view

Today, I had the chance to dine with a few co-workers at napa & co for a special lunch. Usually I wonder if it will be too crowded, it being so popular. But I didn't have to worry this time because our reservations were to dine at a secret place in the restaurant. Napa has transformed their trendy wine closet into a special private dining area. Away from the hustle and bustle of the front room, you can dine while gazing at the surrounding walls of wine bottles, up close and personal. All through mealtime I found myself dreaming about which from the wall I would love to open. As Charlie, one of the owners, nonchalantly entered the room to pull one for a customer, it was fun to guess which one had left. It being lunchtime, mostly, we ordered sandwiches and salads. I had the hand cut pasta with sauce to die for. The food, as usual, was fresh and fabulous. Well, it has been rumored that when movie stars are visiting Stamford, that's where they dine. I don't blame them. I loved it too. Room with a private view of Stamford Downtown--I like the "new" in napa.....
