Blog share Stamford Advocate: Stamford theater screens ‘Itch’ as part of Monroe celebration

The 1955 Marilyn Monroe comedy “The Seven Year Itch” is getting a special screening at the Avon Theatre. (Avon Theatre, 272 Bedford St., Stamford. Thursday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m.)

The movie is part of Stamford’s celebration of the new public art exhibit “Timeless - The Works of Seward Johnson”, which includes a 26-feet tall sculpture on Monroe in her iconic white summer dress in the Billy Wilder comedy. Dozens of pieces by Johnson are on view in downtown Stamford through August.

The iconic white dress is the outfit that gets blown up in a suggestive way when when the Monroe character in the movie stands on a subway grate to cool off during a heatwave.

“The Seven Year Itch” is directed by Billy Wilder who would go on to collaborate with Monroe on another of her most famous films, the 1959 “Some Like It Hot.”

George Axelrod wrote the script based on his hit Broadway play about a married man (Tom Ewell) on his own in New York City while his wife spends the summer in a mountain resort that he only visits on weekends. Monroe is the single woman who moves in downstairs and puts her neighbor’s fidelity to the test.
The subway grate sequence became instantly famous when Monroe’s then-husband Joe DiMaggio reportedly objected to the way his wife was exposed. The sports star’s aggravation grew when a photo from that scene became the movie’s poster art.
