Summer intern corner....

 Summer Intern corner #2:
Shania (rear) and Melanie (front)

Over the course of the last couple of weeks, I have realized how important it is to have a good relationship with your coworkers. Listening to critiques, following direction, and voicing an opinion is critical in being successful in a work environment. To be able and sufficient at those skills, it is important to feel comfortable and acclimated to a new job and new coworkers. I have tried to form positive relationships by being respectful, thoughtful, and hardworking. This past week, a fellow intern and I worked together to make approximately 500 goodie bags for an upcoming event. Through this teamwork, I furthered my bond with my fellow intern and grew the trust between my employers and myself.

The DSSD staff is vital when it comes to the betterment of our community. Being a part of their organization is a big deal. It has been a pleasure to work there, but I also know it will benefit me down the road to have gotten this experience. I know that when I go into other jobs in the future, I can refer back to this as a learning experience and to source several positive recommendations.

To build a network rooted in my DSSD experience I can keep in touch with my bosses past this summer. I can also choose to volunteer or attend future events that DSSD works so hard to produce.

Summer Intern corner is back for another year! Melanie's first few weeks:

What is it like to be a summer intern with Stamford Downtown?  Melanie shares her first few weeks  experience.....

So far, I have really enjoyed working for The Stamford Downtown Special Services District. Like any successful business, it does get a little hectic sometimes, but overall I enjoy the pace. I also find it interesting to be informed of new development plans and events.
One challenge I have encountered is adapting to the way other people are organized and learning how to understand certain directions. I always try to follow up with several questions if I'm ever unsure about the task I've been given to avoid any confusion. I also find that prioritizing tasks helps get important projects done if I’m crunched for time. If I still have a few thing to finish up at the end of the day, sometimes I will stay a little later than 4 PM. During my first week, I realized that being part of a team is often times very helpful. Even having someone to talk to while stuffing envelopes really makes the job more fun. So, I learned to appreciate my coworkers.
I think my strengths are my dedication and my work ethic. One day I stayed after an extra hour in order to help out my boss. I think this shows dedication and responsibility because now I can be trusted with fulfilling large tasks. I think my weakness is my ability to become overwhelmed. I need to work on handling multiple tasks all at once.

MMMBop

By Hanson
Oh oh oh oh oh
Yeah
You have so many relationships in this life
Only one or two will last
You go through all the pain and strife
Then you turn your back and they're gone so fast
Oh yeah
And they're gone so fast, yeah
Oh
So hold on the ones who really care
In the end they'll be the only ones there
And when you get old and start losing your hair
Can you tell me who will still care
Can you tell me who will still care?
Oh care
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du, yeah
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du, yeah
Said oh yeah
In an mmmbop they're gone
Yeah yeah
Plant a seed, plant a flower, plant a rose
You can plant any one of those
Keep planting to find out which one grows
It's a secret no one knows
It's a secret no one knows
Oh, no one knows
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du, yeah
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du, yeah
In an mmmbop they're gone
In an mmmbop they're not there
In an mmmbop they're gone
In an mmmbop they're not there
Until you lose your hair
Oh
But you don't care, yeah
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du, yeah
Mmmbop, ba duba dop

Can you tell me? (If it's going to be a daisy or a rose?)
You say you can but you don't know
Can you tell me? oh (Which flower's going to grow?)

Can you tell me?
You say you can but you don't know
You say you can but you don't know

Purchase tickets online at www.avontheatre.org

Ticket prices are as follows: Carte Blanche Members: FREE, Members: $7,
Students & Seniors: $9, Nonmembers: $12.

ABOUT THE FILM:

“Perhaps the most perfectly constructed horror story in our time.” – Hollywood Reporter

Based on Peter Benchley's best-selling novel, Steven Spielberg's 1975 shark saga set the standard for the new Hollywood popcorn blockbuster while frightening millions of moviegoers out of the water. One early summer night on fictional Amity Island, Chrissie decides to take a moonlight skinny dip while her friends party on the beach. Yanked suddenly below the ocean surface, she never returns. When pieces of her wash ashore, Police Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) suspects the worst, but Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton), mindful of the lucrative tourist trade and the approaching July 4th holiday, refuses to put the island on a business-killing shark alert. After the shark dines on a few more victims, the Mayor orders the local fishermen to catch the culprit. Satisfied with the shark they find, the greedy Mayor reopens the beaches, despite the warning from visiting marine scientist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) that the attacks were probably caused by a far more formidable Great White. One more fatality later, Brody and Hooper join forces with flinty old salt Quint (Robert Shaw), the only local fisherman willing to take on a Great White. The three ride off on Quint's boat "The Orca," soon coming face to teeth with the enemy. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi
Rated PG | In English | 124 minutes
