Wow! We’ve got some really inventive restaurants here in Stamford. Yesterday I got an e-mail from napa & co. advertising their new “Family Meal” concept, based on the communal table, family-style meal the staff is served before the restaurant opens. I’ll admit I was skeptical at first, but took a chance and booked a reservation for two. What a very pleasant surprise. The food, the wine and the other guests all surpassed our expectations. We sat down at 6:30 and were greeted by Chef Bill Taibe who came to our table to describe the culinary creations to expect. Then a steady stream of remarkable food began flowing to the table. Not all regular napa & co. menu items, but equally as inventive and delicious. With the food came the wines, brilliantly paired with each course by napa & co. owner, Mary Schaffer. Mary and her friendly, efficient staff spent the evening bustling around the table to ensure no glass or plate was ever empty. We felt like the only guests in an otherwise very busy restaurant. Perhaps we all ate too much, but the meal was so spectacular we could not resist. Finally, to top off a perfect evening, there were the other guests at our table. Is it Stamford, is it napa & co. or is it both that combines to draw the most fascinating group of people imaginable? Our table for 10 spanned the globe, age brackets and career paths. We proved the world is both tiny and vast as we discovered old connections and forged new ones. From beginning to end the conversation was interesting, spirited and enlightening. Three hours just flew by and we all departed remarking that we hope napa continues this great concept. It transformed a mundane Wednesday evening into a memorable experience. Plus, at $50 per person all-inclusive, an unparalleled value. If you decide to try it in future months, we’ll probably see you there.
