This is Lester. He helps keep the downtown clean and tidy; part of the Clean, Green and Safe Program.
Say "hi" if you see him around town... He's not smiling in this picture because he's camera shy, but believe me, he's friendly. Thanks for all you do Lester!
About Clean, Green
and Safe….
The Stamford
Downtown Special Services District creates, manages and promotes a quality
downtown environment to enhance its economic vitality. The DSSD fosters economic growth through a
retail recruitment and retention program, special events and marketing programs
and by providing enhanced operational services which improve the downtown's
physical environment. These programs
promote a clean, green and safe downtown.
Clean: The Clean Team has been keeping Stamford’s
downtown “spic and span” since September 1993.
On duty seven days a week, the Clean Team’s efforts include vacuuming
and sweeping the sidewalks, removing graffiti, and maintaining Stamford’s
downtown parks. The hard work of the
Clean Team results in of 23+ tons of garbage collected each year!
Green: The
Streetscape Program was established in 1994 by a group of dedicated volunteers
determined to enhance the downtown environment.
Their mission was to create an enhanced, pedestrian-oriented environment
conducive to strolling and enjoyment.
Bold, massed plantings in the parks and tubs of greenery bursting with
flowers, inspire people to visit and enjoy the downtown. Many groups are partners with the DSSD in a
quest to create a visually inviting streetscape.
Safe:
The Stamford Downtown Ambassador Program was founded in 1997 to provide
the Stamford Downtown community with many valuable services. All Ambassadors are trained in security-related
matters, first aid, and CPR. In
addition, they are directly linked to each other, as well as, the police, fire
department, rescue team and the DSSD office via two-way radio. They are also specially trained to know
everything there is to know about the Stamford Downtown making them an ideal
source for providing directions, recommending a restaurant, or even suggesting
a show.
