Being vegged out at Navaratna...

Update to a past post:
Since posting about Narvaratna, this vegetarian Indian restaurant has become Kosher certified!   Kosher is a way to describe how some food might be prepared : some people eat kosher food for religious, cultural, health and quality reasons. If you are curious about what kosher means follow this link.
A terrific addition to Stamford Downtown offering a kosher options to our downtown diners.  Check it out!

"Hot, hot, hot" and I don't mean the 100 degree heat we've been experiencing;  Just came back from lunch at Navaratna.  This little place is an authentic Vegetarian Indian Restaurant on Atlantic Street.  Ok, so I'm not a big fan of spicy food so I didn't order anything that might completely blow me away, but two of my dining partners were much braver.  The food is certainly a change from the usual salad that I eat for lunch, so if you are looking for a new place to experiment, Navarantana is worth the trip.
I don't remember the names of any of the dishes we ordered so I'll have to wing it here.  I do, however, remember that my dish was pureed spinach with cottage cheese (not spicy). Some of my blogger followers might know this dish as it is quite common.   My fellow diners had super spicy vegetable curry dish a Spicy Sampler with assorted Indian bread specialties.  The breads were all different textures and tastes and an adventure all their own. the end of this culinary travel came this beautiful frozen dessert that was not spicy at all, and quite yummy.

Pan-Indian. A "pure vegetarian restaurant". Specializing in the cuisine of  North & South Indian vegetarian dishes, where cooks typically use rich spices and aromatic herbs to transform intricate conjurations of vegetables, lentils, and rice into tasty meals that are as fulfilling as they are filling. Masala Dosa, Idli, Vada and Sambar are the mainstays of a style of cooking with which all India, and now much of the rest of the world, has fallen in love.
