Summer intern update #4 - A final farewell from Lauren, Erik, and Scott

Written on Wed, 6/19:
Today is a big day for all of us, as it is our last day on internship, but furthermore, our last day of being high school students.  Eric and I graduate on Friday, and Scott’s graduation is this Saturday.  We all have a few nerves about the upcoming months, but feel that we are more than ready.  This internship has prepared us for the “real world” in many ways.  It has taught us how to wake up (on time!), manage our schedules, behave in an office setting, exposed us to the world of business, and also taught us how to be successful.  We have formed many friendships, learned many lessons, and served as a big help around the office.  Interning at the DSSD was a great way to end our high school lives, and really has gotten us excited to start our own careers and independence.  We are going to miss everyone here at the DSSD, because they are what made this experience so memorable!  Luckily, we will all be around this summer to return to some of the many events occurring in Stamford Downtown.  We hope to see you there!  (editors note: it was our pleasure!)

Intern Update #3

Scott, who is one of our summer interns, had a project to hand in as his final report on his Stamford Downtown internship project.  He created this fancy poster board about the ARTWALK that was this past weekend. He should get an "A" in my opinion...

Intern Update #2

Intern Update #2 (6/13/13)
The past few days have been extremely busy for us here at the DSSD!  Scott has been working very hard to prepare for the ARTWALK, which is happening this Friday and Saturday.  He has been delivering water and wine to the restaurants, working on the logistics, and adding his finishing touches to make sure that everything runs smoothly.  Eric and I were mainly working on the Sculpture Opening Party, which took place on June 11.  We had fun writing the scripts for the trolley tours, picking out the décor, and finally working at the party.  Now, we have shifted our attention to getting ready for the first Alive@Five concert, which is happening next Thursday.
At the end of each week of internship, our school asks us to answer a specific question in about 150 words.  This past week, the question was: “How does the work of professionals in your internship field contribute to the community (local, national and/or global)?”   I answered this prompt by saying “The DSSD is an organization in Stamford that is not affiliated with the government in any way. It is sponsored by the companies in Downtown Stamford and is purposed to keep Stamford "alive" and safe. The DSSD sends out eight "ambassadors" to assist pedestrians in the streets of downtown Stamford, and assure their safety. The DSSD runs events such as Alive@Five, the Art Walk, Restaurant Week, the French Market, and many other exciting events that keep people coming out to socialize and support the town of Stamford. The DSSD not only contributes to the community by making it a safer place to be, but it also contributes to the culture of the town. People from all over come to Alive@Five to see major artists, such as Hot Chelle Ray, Howie Day, or Matt Nathanson. The DSSD is a fantastic, privately run organization that contributes to the city of Stamford in many great ways.”  Eric, Scott, and I have all thoroughly enjoyed our time here, and are getting sad as the last few days are rolling in!

Meet our Stamford Downtown Summer Interns

For the last few years, we have been blessed with a couple of high school summer interns,  that work for a few weeks, or for the whole summer at the Stamford Downtown office.   They are given school credit for participating and spend 30 hours a week on average engulfed in Stamford Downtown Summer Events.
Whether it's helping to run a
event, attending meetings, communicating with merchants or just dropping off the mail, our summer interns are more than helpful -- they are a welcome addition to the office.  We share ideas and work on projects side by side.   We've been super lucky to have some terrific interns, and this year is no different.  This year, we have three interns: Eric, Scott and Lauren.  (We expect one more at the end of June) Their home school asks them to document what they are learning/projects they work on-- all of which I plan to share here with you each week.

Most recently, they are working on our Sculpture and ArtWalk events.

Here's a short Summer Intern update...

This past week, we have been working on writing the scripts for the sculpture tours.  We have enjoyed reading the background information on the artists, viewing their sculptures, and creating the tour for next week’s “opening party”.  We have also enjoyed learning about all of the planning that goes into the creation of an event.  It has been really interesting to see how much work has to be done, and all that may be overlooked.  All of the effort that the staff puts into each and every event here at the DSSD is extremely apparent within the office.  We have also been working on The Art Walk, which is being held on June 14th and 15th. It has been great for us because we get to walk around the downtown talking to merchants about the event.
