GHS CHOIRS TO PERFORM on May 1, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1101 Bedford Street

GHS CHOIRS TO PERFORM SONG CYCLE BY EMMY AND GRAMMY-AWARD WINNER ROB MATHES IN YEAR-END CONCERT
GHS Alum Pens Composed and Arranged Piece Designed to Capture
Experience of Senior Class – Including His Daughter, Emma

Greenwich High School’s Combined Choirs will celebrate the end of the school year with a very special concert on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1101 Bedford Street, Stamford, Conn., at 8:00 p.m.  Emmy-winning and Grammy-nominated musician (and GHS parent) Rob Mathes has written a song cycle entitled “Far From Here,” that celebrates this year’s senior class and captures the unique mix of excitement and uncertainty that defines this landmark moment in their lives.

Tickets for the concert are $20 for general admission and $10 for students, and are available at the door or from participating students. Mathes, a 1981 GHS graduate, has long discussed the idea of a commission with Patrick Taylor, the GHS director of choirs and program associate for music. Emma’s upcoming graduation, he said, “represented the perfect opportunity to make it happen.”

For more information on Rob Mathes, visit www.robmathes.com.

Help needed: Honey Locust Tree Relocation - May 4

 We Are Looking for Participants!

Honey Locust Tree Relocation

Saturday, May 4

Connecticut meet up 10:30 a.m. (Franklin Street Works)

New York meet up at approximately 12:30pm (Clocktower Gallery)

There are 55 Honey Locust trees growing in New York City’s Zuccoti Park, the central locale of the 2011 Occupy Walls Street protests. Artist David Horvitz collected the seeds from those trees in 2012 and is now germinating them in New York’s Clocktower Gallery. At the end of Horvitz’s Clocktower residency the seedlings will be carried to Connecticut, one tree per person, walking first to Zuccotti Park and then to Grand Central’s Metro North train to Stamford (a 40 - 60 minute ride). Trees will continue to germinate at Franklin Street Works during the Strange Invitation exhibition. To sign up for the event please email your RSVP to sandrine@franklinstreetworks.org by May 1, 2013.

Franklin Street Works, 41 Franklin Street, Stamford, CT 06901 www.franklinstreetworks.org

In June, Horvitz and Franklin Street Works will find permanent homes for the trees, ideally at public institutions such as museums, libraries, and college campuses.
Clocktower Gallery is located at 108 Leonard Street, 13th Floor New York, NY 10013. For more on the artist and project visit http://artonair.org/residency/david-horvitz.

    Earth Day/Week: 4/21-4/27

GOV. MALLOY RELEASES EARTH DAY STATEMENT
(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy released the following statement on the 43rd celebration of Earth Day, April 22:
“The 43rd annual Earth Day celebration is a great reminder that environmental preservation is key to creating healthy, livable, and viable communities. We’ve made good progress balancing sustainability with development, and we must continue to look for ways to protect our natural resources as we grow our economy.  Our efforts to reduce energy use and find cleaner, cheaper, more reliable ways to power Connecticut’s homes and businesses, our investments in brownfield remediation that will return formerly toxic land to viability, the work to upgrade infrastructure to ensure less pollution flows into Long Island Sound—these initiatives will make Connecticut a healthier and cleaner state now and for future generations. I applaud the work being done by stakeholders and advocates across the globe to reduce our impact on the planet.”

    Fast, fresh, healthy.

Had lunch at TopThis today. This new lunch spot is right across from Vet's Park and short walk from the Stamford Town Center.  Super busy at lunchtime  After talking to Jesse, the owner and manager, he tells me that the lunch crowd is really a surprise to him.  He opened with the intention that he'd be more busy with his special frozen yogurt wall.  Now Top This is busy with both.....I had a #6 panini - turkey with bacon and avocado.  Hot and delish.  The bread was an awesome pizza dough roll of some sort.  Fresh and yummy.   Jesse tells me the #1 is the hottest ticket--gotta come back and try that one next time.  Didn't have the yogurt, but I'm told it's a rival to some of the others in town (we won't name names here). The French press coffee was a nice treat too.
Try it out; i bet you'll like.
