BALLET FOLKLORICO DE MEXICO, Sept 27, 2012 8:00 PM @ Palace Theater

You do not have be Mexican to experience this great culture and you do not have to go to Mexico. The Ballet Folklorico de Mexico is the successful creation of dancer, teacher and choreographer Amalia Hernández. After training at the Mexican Academy of Dance, Ms. Hernández began her own small company in 1952. Now, 60 years later, the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico is comprised of 76 folk dancers and has been applauded with over 200 awards.

You are about to witness the amazing culture of Mexico come alive when the dancers of Ballet Folklorico de Mexico take the stage in Stamford on Sept 27th. This event is being brought to you by the Namaskaar Foundation-World on Stage in a colorful, fast-paced, incredibly entertaining show that brings together the music, dance and costumes of rich Mexican folklore.

The dances and costumes are infused with the traditional culture of Mexico. “Folklorico” is a collective term for traditional Latin American dances that emphasize and combine local folk cultures with ballet characteristics. With Ballet Folklorico de Mexico, the costumes, music and choreography express the history and the great social, religious, and artistic traditions of various regions of Mexico.

The company features many dance styles in reflecting the lifestyles of the regions. Some of the styles include danza, a popular ballroom dance genre somewhat similar to the waltz; polka, flamenco, The Fans, The Coco song, The Bamba, The Woodpecker Bird, The Weeper, The Moor, and more.

The Ballet Folklorico de México has presented more than 100 international tours in over 80 countries for a total of over 15,000 performances.

Meet the Architects
Talk to the architects for the park, the carousel pavilion and the fountain and skating rink. Representatives from the Olin Studio will be on hand to discuss their landscape design. Gray Organschi Architects will bring images of the Carousel & Event Pavilion and the sculptural canopy. These structures will go into construction in 2013. River Architects is the provisional finalist of the fountain/ice rink designer selection process. They will bring images and coloring post cards for the children.

A multi-million dollar gift for the construction of the ice skating rink and fountain will be announced at 1:00.

Help Choose the Carousel Animals
Representatives of Carousel Works, the builder of the carousel will be on hand. The David & Marian Nissen Carousel will be hand carved and a Carousel Works carver will be here to demonstrate his craft. Bring the kids to help choose the 30 horses and animals that will be carved for Mill River Park's carousel.

Hot Air Balloon Ride
Rise ten stories over the park and view the entire landscape and how it fits in the heart of Stamford. Balloon rides are $10 per person.

Join the Campaign
As you probably know, Mill River Park is being developed by a public/private partnership, because the City could not afford to build it on its own. Mill River Collaborative is committed to raising $20 million of the estimated $60 million cost of building the entire park. So far we have raised $13 million including funding for the carousel, the carousel & event pavilion, the skating rink and fountain. The campaign is now open to the public for contributions of any amount. Contributions over $300 will be acknowledged with the donors' names permanently engraved in granite in the park. Contributions can be made for trees, benches, water fountains and other park features.

If you have any questions please email Nia Rhodes Jackson, Director of Programs at nia@millriverpark.com.

EOS for a Fall lunch hour...

EOS started as an idea, a vision of how a contemporary Greek restaurant should look, taste and feel. Clean lines and simple architecture mixed with accents of blue to mimic the still waters of the Mediterranean.  The cuisine echoes our passion for the flavors and aromas we enjoy now and lovingly remember growing up.   Undiminished freshness and simplicity is our goal, paired with a cool, relaxed atmosphere to provide an authentic Greek experience.

An Evening of Classical Dance by Divya & Swathi Krishnan Saturday, September 15, 4:30 PM

"An Evening of Classical Dance" is to raise funds for the SMVA Trust to build a free school for tribal children in rural India.

With the help of generous donors, the SMVA Trust has brought hope, change and new outcomes to the lives of the villagers and children of this remote part of Nellore District, Andhra Pradesh in southern India. With a great deal of enthusiasm, dedication and hard work, the children and their teachers have shown that even those whose families have been illiterate for generations can shine and succeed, scoring the highest grades in the whole "mandal" or district. Education is bringing these children out of the cycle of child labor, starvation, and lack of opportunities. As they learn and grow, they are spreading their knowledge to all those around them, including their elders, thus uplifting others in the region as well.
For more information on the project, visit: http://www.karunamayi.org/charities/Sri-Karunamayi-School.shtml

In the news...Charles Fazzino Adds Artistic Stamp to Stamford Lightbox | Fazzino

Charles Fazzino Adds Artistic Stamp to Stamford Lightbox | Fazzino

On the heels of his involvement with “Horsin’ Around Downtown,” the Stamford Downtown organization commissioned Charles Fazzino to further brighten up the landscape by painting one of the main lightboxes on the streets of Stamford, CT.  Over the course of several weeks, Fazzino turned what was previously a five-foot-tall eyesore to local business owners into a beautiful piece of public sculpture. Choosing the theme of “shop downtown,” Fazzino turned the lightbox into an oversized shopping bag, bursting with vibrant colors and exciting detail. You can see the Fazzino-painted lightbox for yourself at 20 Summer St. in Stamford, CT.
“It was gratifying to be able to take a sterile, rather unsightly object and transform it into a beautiful piece of artwork while still maintaining it’s usefulness. It still functions as a lightbox, but now people enjoy looking at it and it conveys the message that Stamford is a shopping, dining, and recreating mecca. I’m proud to have been asked to do it,” Said Charles Fazzino
