Spring "plates" menu at Capital Grille--check it out for lunch...

The Capital Grille is offering a new Spring “Plates”  Menu

The Capital Grille has launced its Spring “Plates” menu, featuring three new selections that are perfect for the season:  Asparagus Soup, Shrimp and Piquillo Peppers with Crisp Bomba Rice and Grilled Spring Vegetables.  As always, guests of The Capital Grille can customize their lunch, choosing from nine “plates” offerings – soup or salad, sandwich and a side – all for $18.

According to Executive Chef Matthew Schmalle, it’s out with the cold!  “The new Spring “Plates” lunch menu really highlights some of the crisp, garden-fresh ingredients that are in-season now. Fresh asparagus is the quintessential spring vegetable, and it stars in our Asparagus Soup. This dish serves as a delightful way to start your lunch.  For a sweet and spicy kick, try our Shrimp and Piquillo Peppers with Crisp Bomba Rice.  We are also pleased to offer side dishes made with the freshest spring ingredients, like our Grilled Spring Vegetables, and French Green Beans, both light and refreshing additions to any of our lunch entrée selections.”

For guests with a limited amount of time at lunch, The Capital Grille ensures they can enjoy the personalized service and mouth-watering cuisine that characterize a Capital Grille dining experience and still be on their way in about 45 minutes.  Guests can also tempt their appetites with traditional lunch favorites like French Onion Soup, The Grille’s Signature Cheeseburger, Ribeye Steak Sandwich with Caramelized Onions and Havarti or the Lobster and Crab Burger, among other classics.

Juicy, tender dry-aged steaks; fresh seafood and daily specials - and exceptional, personalized service.

As a follow up to my post:   Today is Friday, March 30, and today I sampled Capital Grille for lunch.  I would highly recommend a visit at lunchtime to try the new spring menu.   Here's the deal.....I really can't have a long lunch, or be away from my desk for long, and Capital Grille makes sure the I am in an out within an hour.  Lunch time goes by fast when you are eating and chatting with a friend, but without having to worry about watching the clock, it made lunch so much more enjoyable.  We were seated right away, and ordered in no time.  Beverages and bread, had the soup super quick,  then main course which was the Lobster Roll and fries for me.
It was super awesome.  Super service. Super menu.

EXCLUSIVE INVITATION: 3/29 @ 7pm Fernando Luis Alvarez Closes Saks To Raise Funds for a New Generation of Innovative After-School Programming

For years, contemporary artist Fernando Luis Alvarez struggled with a split identity. During the day, he was a businessman outfitted in tailored suits and lunch-time conference calls. At night, however, the artist emerged. Still clad in his daytime uniform of black and button-downs, Alvarez would paint until the early hours of the morning; starched cuffs rubbing against wet paint, leather soles tracking oils across the floor.

This performance represents how Alvarez finally made the full-transition from business to art. Staged in July 2010 at the Le Meridien Philadelphia, this was one of a series of live events orchestrated for luxury brands including Saks 5th Avenue and Chanel. Stamford Downtown is proud to announce that they have commissioned pop artist Charles Fazzino to create the logo and visual identity for this Summer’s art exhibit, Horsin’ Around Stamford Downtown, Art in Public Places. “We are so proud to have Charles participate in this exciting event. His uniquely painted oversized horse sculpture will be a wonderful landmark for all to see this summer in Stamford Downtown,” said Sandy Goldstein, President of Stamford Downtown.”
Charles Fazzino added “I am honored to be working with Sandy and her team in Stamford. I’ve been a big proponent of public art projects for many years and I’m looking forward to seeing the incredible sculptures the artists taking part will produce. It’s going to be thrilling to see.”
Look for the horses to start appearing in and around town in June. The exhibition will continue through August, after which the sculptures will be sold at auction with a portion of the proceeds benefiting The Ferguson Library.

About Horsin’ Around Stamford Downtown
Horsin’ Around Stamford Downtown, an exciting interactive outdoor sculpture exhibit, will transform the downtown into a colorful equine environment this summer. In early June, Stamford Downtown will place 40 oversized, originally designed and painted fiberglass horses throughout Stamford Downtown and the Stamford Town Center. The horses will be on display for free public viewing and enjoyment by thousands of area residents and visitors all summer.
Horsin’ Around Stamford Downtown is the fifth exhibit of its kind produced by Stamford Downtown, a non-profit organization responsible for managing and promoting the Stamford downtown as the region’s destination for dining, entertainment, retail, housing, and education.
Stamford Downtown has assembled some of thetri-state’s most talented artists to create works of art using the unpainted fiberglass horses. The artists were chosen from a pool of 200 submissions through a juried selection process.
Once a design is chosen by a sponsor, it can take up to four weeks to complete. Artists can choose to work on their horse at Stamford Downtown’s Public Art Studio at 61 Broad Street, or at their own studios. The public is invited to view the artistic process at the Public Art Studio.
After the summer-long exhibit, the horse sculptures will be rounded up and refurbished for an auction.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit The Ferguson Library.
Horsin’ Around Stamford Downtown builds on the enormous successes of past interactive exhibits, CowParade Stamford 2000, Art-O-Mobiles in 2001, Stamford Safari in 2003 and It’s Reigning Cats & Dogs in 2010.  Those exhibits brought record -breaking tourism and spending dollars estimated in the hundreds of thousands to the downtown and over $400,000 was raised for charities as a result of the four auctions.
On June 6, Stamford Downtown will host a kickoff party and viewing for sponsors, artists and the public at the Stamford Marriott.  For more information about Horsin’ Around Stamford Downtown, call 203-348-5285 or visit www.stamford-downtown.com

Pansies in the Downtown...Spring can't be too far away...

Tresser and Greyrock pansies

Some pansy history (wikapedia style):
Historical background--
In the early years of the 19th century, Lady Mary Elizabeth Bennet (1785–1861), daughter of the Lord of Tankerville, collected and cultivated every sort of Viola tricolor (commonly, heartsease) she could procure in her father's garden at Walton-upon-Thames, Surrey. Under the supervision of her gardener, William Richardson, a large variety of plants was produced via cross-breeding. In 1812, she introduced her pansies to the horticultural world, and, in 1813, Mr. Lee, a well-known florist and nurseryman, further cultivated the flower. Other nurserymen followed Lee's example, and the pansy became a favorite among the public.
About the same time that Lady Bennett was busy cultivating heartsease, James, Lord Gambier was doing the same in his garden at Iver under the advice and guidance of his gardener Thomson. A yellow viola, Viola lutea, and a wide-petalled pale yellow species of Russian origin, Viola altaica were among the crosses that laid the foundation for the new hybrids classed as Viola x Wittrockiana. A round flower of overlapping petals was the aim of early trials; in the late 1830s a chance sport that no longer had narrow nectar guides of dark color on the petals but a broad dark blotch on the petals (which came to be called the "face"), was found. It was developed in Gambier's garden and released to the public in 1839 with the name "Medora".
By 1833, there were 400 named pansies available to gardeners who once considered its progenitor, heartsease, a weed. Specific guidelines were formulated for Show Pansies but amateur gardeners preferred the less demanding Fancy Pansies. About this time, James Grieve developed the viola and Dr. Charles Stuart developed the violetta, both smaller, more compact plants than the pansy.
