Dancing Girl at Old Town Hall on Tues, Aug 10 at 1pm

Dancing Girl returns to Atlantic Street
Mayor Michael Pavia and his wife Maureen will preside over a ceremony to welcome the Dancing Girl back to Stamford Downtown following nearly a decade of absence.

Dedication of the Dancing Girl. In 1987, local businessman Matthew Stacom and his wife Lesta, loaned to the City of Stamford the sculpture Dancing Girl, created by noted Stamford sculptor James Knowles. The sculpture was placed as the focal point in a fountain at the newly renovated Kiwanis Park, and for the next 14 years Dancing Girl graced Atlantic Street with its fluid lines and movement. But in 2001, the sculpture was removed for the remodel of the Palace Theatre and adjacent Kiwanis Park. For the next 9 years it languished in storage. Now, thanks to the generosity of Mr. & Mrs. Stacom who have donated Dancing Girl to the city, Eastern Land Management that has created a beautiful garden surrounding the sculpture as a gift to the city and the Paramount Stone Company that has donated a granite block to hold the commemorative plaque, Dancing Girl has returned to the light of day. All of this was made possible through the leadership of Mayor Michael A. Pavia and the perseverance of the Old Town Hall Redevelopment Authority and the Stamford Downtown Special Services District.

Please join us for the dedication.

Have you seen the The Old Leather Man?

Loft Artists Association Gallery
Presents
‘Susan McCaslin:
Recent Works Inspired by The Old Leather Man’
August 6 - September 12, 2010
Opening Reception, Sunday August 8, 2-5 pm

Lecture and Book Signing

Dan W. DeLuca, author of “The Old Leather Man, Historical Accounts of a Connecticut and New York Legend”

Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 2:00 pm

Loft Artists Association Gallery presents ‘Susan McCaslin: Recent Works Inspired by the Old Leather Man’, an installation and painting show by Susan McCaslin. The exhibit runs from August 6 through September 12, 2010. An opening reception is planned for Sunday, August 8 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. This is a free event open to the public.

On Sunday, September 12 at 2 pm, Dan W. DeLuca, author and leading expert on the Old Leather Man, will give a free lecture and will be available to sign his book, ‘The Old Leather Man, Historical Accounts of a Connecticut and New York Legend.’ Books will be available for sale in the gallery throughout the duration of the show. This is a free lecture open to the public.

McCaslin’s exhibit is inspired by an eccentric wanderer who, around 1883 and for almost six years, walked a circuitous route every 34 days between Ossining NY and Old Saybrook CT. McCaslin

Multiple styles and techniques that vary from nature paintings to photographic installations will be exhibited by McCaslin as she illustrates what she thinks the wanderer might have seen as he walked the countryside, and conversely, what others saw of him.

Included in the exhibit will be the ongoing project "1000 Postcards," an homage to anyone who travels and chooses to keep a record of their experiences, sending proof of their journey to family or friends. Visitors are welcome to handle the cards in the same way postcards are handled as they move from the sender, through the mail, and into the hands of the receiver.

"Recent Works Inspired by The Old Leather Man" will run from August 6 through September 12, with an opening reception that is free and open to the public on Sunday, August 8 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Loft Artists Gallery is located at 845 Canal Street in Stamford, CT. Gallery hours are Friday through Sunday, 12-5 pm. Admission is free. Private appointments are available through the artist, susan@susanmccaslin.com.
