Silences Seen, Watercolors by Bob Callahan

Bob has worked as an advertising agency art director, a partner in the multidisciplinary Design Collaborative, and served as art director for three monthly magazines (Business Management, College Management, and Marketing Management) and also as senior design director for an international marketing agency.

Bob has had an active association for over 30 years with the International Design Conference in Aspen, Colorado. Bob is guest lecturer on “visual thinking” at the University of Connecticut. He also gives slide lectures on the Windward Maroons of Jamaica. Authorship includes Graphic Communications for the Performing Arts published by Theatre Communications Group, Inc. with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, Design Arts Program. Bob is currently working on a book titled "Roots: or why Latin is not a dead language.” He is an ardent student of the arts and a voluminous reader.

Fairfield County photographers will present "Picture Hope for Haiti" from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 2 at Chez Jean Pierre Restaurant, 188 Bedford St., Stamford.

The photography exhibit and silent auction will feature a collection of images from the area's best-known and most inspiring photographers.

Please join us for an evening of art and support a wonderful cause.

All proceeds from sale of the photographs will be donated to Doctors Without Borders and the relief effort in Haiti.

Hors d'oeuvres and a complimentary glass of wine will be served, and a cash bar will be available. The suggested donation for the evening is $25.

Ferrante - a Winter Restaurant Week 2010 experience

Delicious.  Yes, that's the first word that has come to mind to describe my lunch experience yesterday.  I went out to lunch with a few friends to one of the many (19 to be exact) restos that are participating for the next two weeks in the Stamford Downtown Winter Restaurant Weeks promotion.  I always try to get to a couple during the run, and this time I found myself at Ferrante.   Lenny, the owner,  has such a warm and welcoming personality--he couldn't have been, as well as his staff, more attentive to our table.  And although it was rainy and cold outside, it didn't matter for I was whisked away by the presence of gigantic blooming dogwood branches that adorned the room, and the scattering of mini vases full of pink tulips.  How was the food you ask?  Well... It was a 3 course lunch. (I'll eat light for dinner I tell myself).

 First course, Misto Terra.  Besides being "beauty on a plate", it was super fresh and delicious.  Asparagus, red bell peppers, eggplant ragu, zucchini, champignon mushroom surrounded by a herbed drizzle.  Outstanding.  Okay, so second was the entree, and also something I couldn't pronounce-Tagliardi con Carciofi e Spinachi.  Give up?  It's the most delicious flat pasta with baby artichokes, sauteed spinach , white truffle old and fontina cheese.  Not beauty on a plate, but again, outstanding.  And to finish.....Panna Cotta.  Have you tried this before? OMG!  This Italian Flan is to die for.  ( I don't have a photo of that one, but you can imagine.)  I had a fantastic lunch.  Two words now --Delicious and Outstanding! Give it a try for Winter Restaurant Weeks, 2/21- 3/7.

The Avon Theatre Film Center, CHANEL and SAKS Fifth Avenue at Stamford Town Center are pleased to collaborate with the talented contemporary artist, Fernando Luis Alvarez, on Friday, February 12, 2010 from 5:30 – 8:30PM for a very special Valentine's Day celebration of his indulgent lips on canvas. The party will be at his new studio, the Fernando Luis Alvarez Gallery located at 96 Bedford Street in downtown Stamford.

 

In celebration of love and Valentine's Day, Fernando has teamed up with CHANEL, Saks Fifth Avenue, Stamford Town Center and the Avon Theatre to highlight the importance of local businesses working together to bring patrons to downtown Stamford to celebrate the arts. CHANEL, the premiere international cosmetic and fashion icon, will have several of their talented make-up artists on-site creating gorgeous lips on willing patrons while Fernando paints his iconic lips on canvas. Alvarez, together with CHANEL'S celebrity make-up artists will provide us with a fabulous live artistic event. Throughout the evening, Fernando will also hand out signed cards of original artwork featuring his lips. These works of art will, no doubt, be a wonderful way to celebrate Valentine's Day as a gift to your special love.

 

Collector Judyth Kallman who first discovered Alvarez believes his lip creations are "certainly the best art, corporate pairing work since Warhol's Campbell Soup cans…Fernando has found a magic kingdom in lips that no other artist (or for that matter) human beings have interpreted before. He guides us to see them from a different angle by showing us their power, indulgence, exuberance and the reading of their transparency, leaving them in our minds way after we are gone."

 

The Avon Theatre, located just one block from Fernando's gallery, is thrilled to welcome another artist to Bedford Street. The Avon is a non-profit member supported cinema featuring new independent, foreign and documentary films as well as cult classics. The theatre, which is celebrating over 70 years of timeless elegance on Bedford Street, will be kicking off their annual pre-Oscar® Film Festival the following morning, Saturday, February 13. All guests at the Luscious Lips celebration will receive a ticket to attend one of the Oscar®-nominated film festival screenings, which will be every Saturday and Sunday morning at 11:00AM from February 13 thru March 7.

--A call to artists for It's Reigning Cats & Dogs

 

Who: The Stamford Downtown Special Services District is calling all artists to submit designs for It's Reigning Cats & Dogs for jury and possible sponsor selection and exhibit inclusion.

 

What:
It's Reigning Cats & Dogs, similar to the Cow Parade, Art-0-Mobiles and Stamford Safari, is an interactive sculpture exhibit. Artists, through a juried selection process, will paint, sculpt and decorate fiberglass cats and dogs that will be displayed throughout Stamford Downtown June through August, 2010. Upon the exhibit's conclusion, sculptures will be auctioned to benefit local pet adoption agencies and animal welfare organizations.

 

Where: An artist clinic will be held at The Ferguson Library, Corner of Broad & Bedford Streets, Stamford, CT, 3rd Floor Auditorium on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 5pm. We encourage all interested applicants to attend this meeting.
