I always look forward to this time of year. It's the time of year when the Avon theater starts showing all of their Academy Award movies. A few weeks ago, I caught an evening showing of the "Slumdog Millionare"--which was outstanding; sad and happy at the same time. It's still playing there, I think. Basically, its the story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India’s “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” It was a good one.
Besides going to Weight Watchers, what else would get me out of bed on a cold Saturday morning by 9 am? I guess a movie called "The Visitor". I arrived at the Avon super late, in fact I only viewed less than half the movie. Still worthy of an award, since in that short period of time I was able to get all choked up at the end. Anyway, the Avon runs a small marathon of these recognized movies leading up to their special event:
The Avon’s 2nd Annual Oscar® Nominated Film Festival
Featuring select Oscar® nominated films from various categories.
February 7, 14, & 21 at 9:00am & 11:00am,
and February 18 at 6:00pm and 7:45pm
All screenings are FREE for Avon Oscar Gala ticket holders/donors, and Carte Blanche Members. Members - $6 / Senior & Student Nonmembers - $7 / Adult Nonmembers - $10
So, anyway. I didn't feel like staying for the second Saturday morning show, but instead walked down the block to find a place for a late breakfast. There really aren't many breakfast places to close to the theater, maybe McDonald's, but that's it. So I ended up at Starbucks, in the Library, and chowed down on a bowl of warm oatmeal.
It was an different way to start my weekend, and a nice change from the usual weigh in.
