ABOUT THE FILM:

Will Ferrell stars as the ultimate fish out of water, Buddy, who as a baby crawls into Santa's toy bag and is whisked off to the North Pole, where he is raised as an elf. A misfit who grows to be three times the size of his elf family, Buddy ultimately heads to his birthplace of New York City to seek out his roots. Unfortunately, they turn out to be a "Scrooge"-like father (James Caan) and a cynical eight-year-old stepbrother who doesn't believe in Santa. Worst of all, everyone seems to have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. But using his simple elf ways, Buddy sets out to single-handedly win over his family and save Christmas in New York, hoping to at last find his true place in the world. In addition to Ferrell and Caan, the film features an all-star ensemble cast led by Ed Asner as Santa Claus, Bob Newhart, Mary Steenburgen and Zooey Deschanel.

Behind the scenes with the Parade operations team...

Behind the scenes--parade operations:

This is the final installment of our three part series highlighting what goes on behind the scenes for preparation for our Stamford Downtown Parade Spectacular.  The Parade Spectacular is one of the largest helium balloon parades in the country, featuring everyone’s favorite giant balloon characters, award winning marching bands, and fabulous floats.  It takes over 1500 volunteers and staff to run the parade each year.
Role: Banners and Banner holder manager
Name:  Jim
Role Description:
Jim manages the set up, organization and deployment of  the 39+/- banners, usually carried by local cheerleaders,  that are used in the parade to announce each group marching down the route.

Jim
When Jim is at his  9-5 job as an engineering manager at ASML in Wilton and in his spare time volunteering as a referee for various sports teams, he always has the Stamford Parade on his mind. Volunteering for the Stamford Downtown parade for the last 17 years as banner manager is one of the highlights of the holiday season for Jim.  It all starts in July as he starts contacting Stamford Youth Cheerleader Head to secure his holders. He's always keeping an ear out for volunteers.

On parade day, during the 7am banner set up,  his team unrolls each banner and places them on specials hand held poles.  This process can take over and hour.  Then he issues the banners down the street to the proper balloon, float or unit below Oak Street.  When the parade steps off at noon, his banner team feeds in each banner holder as they are called to line up.
He really enjoys being part of the Parade operations team.  However, Jim made sure to tell me that the most important things on parade day, to him and his team, is not to lose a cheerleader. It reminded him of one year when exactly that happened.  He was happy when they found her safely with her parents.    One of his favorite things about the parade is working with such a respectful and professional team.  Jim boasted, "I live in Stamford and I love this city."

Behind the scenes with the Parade Operations Team...

Behind the scenes--parade operations:

Doug
This is a three part series highlighting what goes on behind the scenes for preparation for our Stamford Downtown Parade Spectacular.  The Parade Spectacular is one of the largest helium balloon parades in the country, featuring everyone’s favorite giant balloon characters, award winning marching bands, and fabulous floats.  It takes over 1500 volunteers and staff to run the parade each year.
Role: Operations Supervisor
Name:  Doug
Role Description:
Doug manages the set up of barricades, manages the crew and coordinates the street closings.

Pre-parade starts Saturday morning, as he gets ready for the inflation of the balloons (and an inflation party event that evening).  He manages the light towers and removal of all the traffic lights that are along the parade route.
Parade day, 50+ city workers arrive at 5am to start the barricade set up along the route.  This usually take a little over an hour.  Doug will then inspect to make sure it's all set before the crowds arrive.
During the parade, he makes sure the necessary roads are blocked with excess trucks around Hoyt St and the staging area.
Finally, post parade, Doug manages his city crew follow the end of the parade to quickly remove the barricade, start running the street sweepers and pick up any trash (and confetti) that line the route.  Last step is to replace the traffic lights to safety!

He has been working the Stamford Downtown Parade for over 15 years.  Maybe 20.  He's lost track.  : )
What he enjoys the most about the parade is that gets to see so many different people, from all over.  It brings a great amount of energy to the city, and everyone has a good time.  He said, "I love to see the kids enjoying the day and they are everywhere!"

Behind the scenes with the parade operations team

Behind the scenes--parade operations:

Mark
This is a three part series highlighting what goes on behind the scenes for preparation for our Stamford Downtown Parade Spectacular.  The Parade Spectacular is one of the largest helium balloon parades in the country, featuring everyone’s favorite giant balloon characters, award winning marching bands, and fabulous floats.  It takes over 1500 volunteers and staff to run the parade each year.
Role: Back stage monitor—set up, shuttle and golf carts
Name:  Mark
Role Description:
Mark manages the two golf carts and participant shuttles before, during, and after the parade.  He takes care of the 5 stages that line the route with setting up their signs, music stands and more.  He works with three others on Parade day to make sure volunteers in the parade are transported to where they need to be, when they need to be there. Or on-the-spot rides for a the costume characters that may need to be shuttled, or a dignitary added to the group that stepped off without them.
Mark has been working the parade for over 6 years, in a job he always admired from the sidelines.  He exclaimed “ I would come to the parade every year with my family and watched someone else drive the golf carts up and down the parade route and dreamed it would be me one day”  “I gotta say, I enjoy working the parade every year since”
