Blog share Stamford Advocate: Stamford theater screens ‘Itch’ as part of Monroe celebration

The 1955 Marilyn Monroe comedy “The Seven Year Itch” is getting a special screening at the Avon Theatre. (Avon Theatre, 272 Bedford St., Stamford. Thursday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m.)

The movie is part of Stamford’s celebration of the new public art exhibit “Timeless - The Works of Seward Johnson”, which includes a 26-feet tall sculpture on Monroe in her iconic white summer dress in the Billy Wilder comedy. Dozens of pieces by Johnson are on view in downtown Stamford through August.

The iconic white dress is the outfit that gets blown up in a suggestive way when when the Monroe character in the movie stands on a subway grate to cool off during a heatwave.

“The Seven Year Itch” is directed by Billy Wilder who would go on to collaborate with Monroe on another of her most famous films, the 1959 “Some Like It Hot.”

George Axelrod wrote the script based on his hit Broadway play about a married man (Tom Ewell) on his own in New York City while his wife spends the summer in a mountain resort that he only visits on weekends. Monroe is the single woman who moves in downstairs and puts her neighbor’s fidelity to the test.
The subway grate sequence became instantly famous when Monroe’s then-husband Joe DiMaggio reportedly objected to the way his wife was exposed. The sports star’s aggravation grew when a photo from that scene became the movie’s poster art.

Info share from City of Stamford: Time to get your new Beach sticker...

Mayor’s Office

Beach Stickers Now Available; Required for Park & Beach Parking After May 1st

STAMFORD, CT – Stamford residents with vehicles registered in Stamford can now purchase $25 beach stickers online or in person at the Cashiering & Permitting office in the Government Center. The season will run from May 1, 2018 to September 30, 2018.

“We want to make access to beach stickers as easy as possible, so they are again available online for the majority of Stamford residents,” said Mayor David Martin. “We are hoping to save many people a trip to the Government Center if all they need to do is purchase a regular beach sticker.”

For those who wish to purchase discounted beach stickers or have a car that is not registered in Stamford, beach stickers must still be purchased in person at the Cashiering and Permitting Department, Lobby, 888 Washington Boulevard, Stamford, CT or via mail. To purchase a beach sticker through the mail, send a copy of your motor vehicle registration, a stamped, self-addressed envelope, and payment by check to the Cashiering and Permitting Department.

Stamford residents over the age of 62 with vehicles registered in Stamford are eligible for a discounted $7 beach sticker. Present your motor vehicle license as proof of age.

Stamford residents with cars not registered in Stamford must pay $110 for a beach sticker.

Non-residents can purchase a beach sticker for $250 for weekdays only.
