2013 ARTWALK in Stamford Downtown
Friday, June 14 (6pm-9pm) and
Saturday, June 15 (10 am–7 pm)

Join us for an exciting two days filled with fine art, artists,
galleries, retailers and restaurants . . .

Stamford Downtown is always striving to make Stamford Downtown a better place to live, work and play.  The ARTWALK in Stamford Downtown is yet another step towards showcasing the growing art community and collectors market in Stamford Downtown.  As part of our Art in Public Places initiative, and in conjunction with this year’s Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit entitled “Downtown Abstractions”, Stamford Downtown is sponsoring its first ARTWALK from Friday, June 14th through Saturday, June 15th.

Created by Stamford Downtown Special Services District and its Curator, Art Consultant Valerie Cooper (owner of Picture That, LLC headquartered in Stamford), a phenomenal experience awaits for ARTWALK patrons from Stamford and its surrounding communities.   Showcasing 95 talented northeast artists, photographers and sculptors, our inaugural ARTWALK in Stamford Downtown will reflect a diverse selection of mediums, styles and trends in the contemporary art world.

The ARTWALK (which is FREE to the public) will turn Stamford Downtown into a lively, friendly and varied art gallery for two days.  Check in at our Spring Street ARTWALK registration booth to obtain an ARTWALK map highlighting the locations of exhibiting artists.   Equipped with this map, visitors can easily navigate the four block ATRWALK route and enjoy light refreshments and live music along the way (check events calendar for details).  All art will be available for purchase and the majority will remain on display until July 7th.

In addition to the retail and restaurant locations hosting artists in their establishments, six Stamford Downtown Art Galleries are actively taking part in the ARTWALK by featuring special Summer art exhibitions which include the following:

1.      Fernando Luis Alvarez Gallery, 96 Bedford Street- “Be (come) a Collector

An ARTWALK Opening Celebration will be held on Spring Street Friday, June 14th at 5:00pm where participating artists, gallery owners, retailers and restaurateurs will meet to kick off the two-day event.  All are welcome to attend the Opening festivities! The variety of art styles and the artists themselves will reflect the diversity of cultures present in Fairfield County.

Meet Lester...

This is Lester. He helps keep the downtown clean and tidy; part of the Clean, Green and Safe Program.
Say "hi" if you see him around town... He's not smiling in this picture because he's camera shy, but believe me, he's friendly.  Thanks for all you do Lester!

About Clean, Green and Safe….

The Stamford Downtown Special Services District creates, manages and promotes a quality downtown environment to enhance its economic vitality.  The DSSD fosters economic growth through a retail recruitment and retention program, special events and marketing programs and by providing enhanced operational services which improve the downtown's physical environment.  These programs promote a clean, green and safe downtown.

Clean:  The Clean Team has been keeping Stamford’s downtown “spic and span” since September 1993.  On duty seven days a week, the Clean Team’s efforts include vacuuming and sweeping the sidewalks, removing graffiti, and maintaining Stamford’s downtown parks.  The hard work of the Clean Team results in of 23+ tons of garbage collected each year!

Green:  The Streetscape Program was established in 1994 by a group of dedicated volunteers determined to enhance the downtown environment.  Their mission was to create an enhanced, pedestrian-oriented environment conducive to strolling and enjoyment.  Bold, massed plantings in the parks and tubs of greenery bursting with flowers, inspire people to visit and enjoy the downtown.  Many groups are partners with the DSSD in a quest to create a visually inviting streetscape.

Safe:  The Stamford Downtown Ambassador Program was founded in 1997 to provide the Stamford Downtown community with many valuable services.  All Ambassadors are trained in security-related matters, first aid, and CPR.  In addition, they are directly linked to each other, as well as, the police, fire department, rescue team and the DSSD office via two-way radio.  They are also specially trained to know everything there is to know about the Stamford Downtown making them an ideal source for providing directions, recommending a restaurant, or even suggesting a show.

Blazing Blooms unveiled...

About "Blazing Blooms"...

If you find yourself on Atlantic Street at the corner of Main, you might find yourself immersed in the newest Stamford Downtown permanent outdoor art display, “Blazing Blooms” by Scott Glaser.

It hangs, on the southern facing wall of First County Bank on Atlantic Street, aside the parking lot ramp to the Stamford Town Center measuring 31 feet by 41 feet.   Glaser was chosen, back in 2011 from a list of local artists to complete a massive piece of art that would engage the community with the downtown. Glaser’s subject is a lush world of plants and greenery, sitting amidst the concrete jungle. The painting tricks the eye (trompe l’oeil) and creates the optical illusion of the painting being three dimensional. The style for the “Blazing Blooms” painting is ‘Surrealism meets Realism,’ explains Glaser.
Although the piece looks like an enlarged photograph, the final “sketch” was created by composing Glaser's reference photos for the background image along with his own photography of the gloved hand holding the watering can; the flowers in the foreground, begonias and kalanchoes; window box and window pane. Once configured, the design was gridded and printed out in large sections to be used as reference guides for painting. The painting was done using the grid system, whereby one square at a time is recreated in paint on the canvas.

The paints used were acrylics applied to a gessoed, muslin substrate stretched on a wooden frame. The composition and the act of painting this six foot by eight foot acrylic piece took approximately 1, 250 hours totally eight months.

The large size of the canvas required that the painting be scanned in sixteen separate pieces, then pieced together like a puzzle in a computer and made ready for the printer. Donald Sigovich, a fine art printing and scanning service in Westport, spent two weeks assembling, color correcting, and proofing the final four gigabyte file in order to achieve the most faithful interpretation of the original. Once completed, this file was given to the large format printer to create the finished 31 foot x 41 foot mural.

Special thanks to Marion Glowka, Stamford Downtown Streetscape Coordinator, who acted as floral advisor, hand model and stylist for the photo shoot and to Sam Bridge Nursery, located in Greenwich, as the finest resource for the flower research.

Stop by and take a look!
