“Print What?!”

Stamford's Loft Artists Association
Announces Print Show:

"PRINT WHAT?!"

February 19 through March 21, 2010

Opening Reception: Friday, February 19, 6-9pm

Weekend Workshops: February 27 & March 13 from 1-4pm

PRINT WHAT?! is an art exhibit of printed work

by the members of the Loft Artists Association,

offered in conjunction with workshops demonstrating printmaking in action.

STAMFORD, CT — Just in time to brighten the darkest winter months comes
"Print What?!, a collection of printed works by the artists of the LAA. Monoprints, etchings, photographs, lithographs and screenprints share the gallery walls in a broad display of printmaking. Loft Artist President, Liz Squillace, who many know through her unique and memorable graphic prints, is building the show around her love of printmaking. Here she celebrates the variety, diversity and repetition of the medium.

"Printmaking is a process oriented art", says Squillace. "You go through steps to ready the image. This advance preparation allows a clear crisp image which can be produced again and again in no time at all." While the end result allows for ease of production, the overall process seems highly involved and requires a skillful hand. Depending upon the materials used, it often involves carving into wood, linoleum, or etching metal. The final piece is created but yet untouched by the artist, creating an alluring tension between the handmade and manufactured.

Lina Morielli, an artist who works in many different media and techniques, describes her process for this show: "I'll be doing a solar etching. Light is used to develop an image which is then transferred onto a plastic plate which I will ink and run through a printing press. It will likely be a continuation of my series of hearts."

Two days of workshops and seminars presented by Loft Artists allow visitors to observe demonstrations and try their hands at printing. Print artist, Liz Squillace will demonstrate silkscreening on paper and shirts. "I am excited to share my craft with others," she says. We are all excited to learn first hand about the intricate process of printmaking.

Print What!? will run from February 19 through March 21, 2010, with an opening reception on Friday, February 19 from 6 to 9pm at the Loft Artists Gallery, 845 Canal Street, Stamford, CT. Admission and parking are Free.

New Art Gallery on Bedford Street –12/17 Reception

WHAT: Art Gallery Opening & Reception

Acclaimed Greenwich artist Fernando Luis Alvarez presents "Trip Lips" presented at his newly opened Bedford Street gallery. "Trip Lips" will run from December 17th through February 2, 2010.

WHEN: Opening reception Thursday, December 17, 2009 from 5-9pm

WHERE: 96 Bedford Street, Stamford Downtown

WHO: From the age of 12, Fernando L. Alvarez had a passion for painting. A self taught artist born in Greenwich, CT and raised in Colombia until age 12. He returned to the states to attend high school in Greenwich where he assisted a local known metal sculptor and through her was influenced to enter group shows at the Bruce Museum, Hurlbert Gallery and Silvermine Galleries in New Canaan, CT. He later attended college in London, England where he held his first successful one-man art show in 1997 while studying international business and finance. Since then Fernando has further developed his technique by studying the work of Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Keith Haring, Basquiat, Warhol, Arman and Frank Stella. Alvarez' art stands apart with displays of strange bright red lusty lips all over his canvases. The lips have become one of the trademarks of his artistic work bringing a lusty new meaning to how we perceive them. Additionally, in Alvarez' paintings the viewer recognizes the vivid combination of his interest in business innovation as seen in his early works 'Wall Street Today', 'Blue Ocean Strategy', 'Eclipse Gum' and 'Virgin Cola'. From his rough de Kooning-like strokes, black lining of his figures, crayon-like Basquiat writing, cubist figures and the chaos on the left and/or right of his paintings, the influence is there yet strikingly meshed as his own.

GALLERY LOCATIONS: Since 2008, Fernando's success resulted in the opening of two art galleries within the same year located at 255 Mill Street in Greenwich, CT and 96 Bedford Street in Stamford, CT.

CURRENT MEDIUM: Large format oil on canvas. Aluminum, bronze installation and sculpture work for 2010.

CURRENT TECNIQUE: Takes from de Kooning, Franz Kline, Picasso, Keith
Haring, Basquiat and Frank Stella and creates his own standing apart.
