Reflect and Resolve......Happy New Year!

Now that 2007 is coming to a close, it is time to reflect on what a great year we enjoyed and what we can look forward to in 2008! Other than the outdoor summer concerts, the farmers market and the spectacular parade, there is much more to Stamford Downtown.
I resolve to explore the downtown:
My first resolution this year is to visit more downtown restaurants. There are so many to choose from. I was thrilled when a close friend gave me a gift certificate to dine at Columbus Park (where I can't wait to go, since I have heard the Italian food is consistently excellent.)
Secondly, I plan to shop more. Who doesn't love to shop? Thanks to the few VISA gift cards I received during the holidays, I'm pretty set. The Stamford Town Center will have a few new and exciting store openings but, have you seen the exquisite hand blown glass gallery on Bedford Street? Unique and elegant pieces abound. It's a must visit if you haven't yet.
Lastly, I resolve to do more theater. Whether it be a movie or a show, I will go. The Avon theater will be hosting a Pre-Oscars gala event this year. Quite glamorous for our downtown: Maybe there will be celebrity spottings--who knows? Also, this Spring, the Palace will be performing RENT; that's a must-see for me.
I love that I can do all these exciting outings with friends and family in Stamford downtown. Can't wait to start 2008-- Happy New Year Stamfordites and Friends!

Bennett's Big Time

Know where I went for some fun after the Parade last Sunday? A private party at Bennett's Steakhouse! For several years, some of us celebrate our wonderful Parade experience with Anthony (the owner). This fun loving, yet super tired, hard-working group still had energy to party. We had a mix of appetizers and fun finger food, but I don't even think the enjoyment came so much from the yummy food as it did the atmosphere. The "space" makes it the perfect setting. The rooms are perfect for holding big parties, and quite conducive to mingling. Personally, I like sitting by the front window and watching the people come and go. If you are looking to book a holiday party, Bennett's would be a good choice....

Kona Grill--not just a taste of Hawaii in Stamford Downtown

A group from my office got together for a fun lunch yesterday. With so many great restaurants downtown, it wasn't tough to find a great lunch spot. Located on part of the site of where the old Filenes used to sit, among a long list of new restaurants, is Kona Grill. It is a tough pick from all the new ones, but this time Kona Grill was the choice. You would think it was just a seafood/sushi restaurant, or something Hawaiian, but not at all. The menu offerings were very diverse. With a large outside seating area (heated by the way, and with a cozy fireplace), and roomy dining area (with a wall-long exotic fish tank), we had no trouble being seated. What did I order you ask? Well, I ordered the Sushi Sampler (a few pieces of sushi a salad) and a miso soup. Which was super fresh, and I loved it. The rest of my office buddies ordered an assortment of meals: One of particular note was the adorable Caterpillar Roll--which looked like a real caterpillar! Pan-seared ahi, chicken tacos, and the Hana chicken salad; the menu has a lot to offer and quite satisfying for all. For dessert, we all shared what seemed like a slab of brownie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Very yummy. Great service, and a nice lunch experience. Kona Grill is a nice addition to Stamford Downtown.....

Target, Tiernan's

Yes, I waited till the last minute to by a Halloween costume for my daughter. Shame on me. So, on this past Friday night, a rainy one I might add, we ventured downtown to Target. What a great addition to the area. Target has pretty much anything and everything. They had a huge selection of costumes. So, after our little shopping excursion, we were famished. Looking for a fun place to go, I took my daughter over to Tiernan's (Tiernan's Bar & Restaurant, Phone: 353-8566.) Known for it's partying crowds during the Alive @ 5 concert series, it is also known to serve Irish food and the menu offered some good munchies too. Our dining experience started with sauteed mussels and an order of crab cakes. That was okay, but we needed more....so, we ordered their special fish and chips from the adorable Irish Waiter. It was just what we needed to fill our bellies. The place was a bit busy and loud, so it wasn't ideal for conversation, but it was ideal for enjoying the food and music. Target and Tiernan's helped to make our evening a fun "Mother and Daughter" outing...

Il Falco has a few new offerings...

So, after work, I dropped by one of the "staple" Italian restaurants in Stamford Downtown-- Il Falco. It was a lucky night for me, cause in their upper level party room, they were showcasing some of their new appetizers--and I was invited! Shrimp, rice balls, stuffed zucchini flowers and more. And I must say, it was delish. Among the baked clams and stuffed mushrooms, were the perfectly grilled baby lamb chops. Just delectable. My favorite, by far, was the roasted fig with melted mozzerarella cheese wrapped in procuitto--WOW. Close your eyes and imagine how great a taste, cause it was super. Visit Vinny at Il Falco, and enjoy what most loyal Stamford residents already know--if you are seeking a truly unique experience in Italian dining, your wish will be fulfilled here, in the heart of downtown Stamford.

Siena; not just a color

Last week, my lunchtime plans included dining with my friend at Siena Ristorante, 519 Summer Street. If you are in the mood for Italian, this would be a good choice. They boast of a authentic Tuscan menu, and there were certainly many items to choose from. Not wanting to eat a lot, I ordered a super fresh tomato, sliced with avocado (in between each slice) and topped with fresh crabmeat. So delicious. So fresh. My friend ordered the monkfish with sauteed spinach. Equally yummy. The indoor decor was beautiful too; I loved the way the ceiling was painted with fluffy white clouds. It felt like we were dining outside! The waiters were great, and the service staff were friendly and attentive to our every need. Colorful- a very attractive place: would love to return sometime soon to try the dinner/dessert menu...

the last bit of summer...

Wow, who could have asked for a better summer. It's almost at an end, and school will be starting soon. The outdoor cafes have been so pleasureful. I am going to miss the people watching. One last chance to enjoy the outdoors by taking advantage of restaurant week. (8/20-9/2) Some great new places have been added to the list, like Ferrante. Quite grand indeed

So, last week I experienced the Grand Summer Night at UConn. That's right, it's quite grand. It's the event the Friends of Stamford Downtown put together as their annual public art fundraiser. It was aflutter with an indulgent silent auction, tasty hor d'oeuvres, spirits and friendly chatter. After Mayor Malloy thanked the organizers and attendees, and administered an exciting flat screen tv raffle, the participants were invited to dine at one of the Downtown restaurants of their choice. How exciting--this was my opportunity to try a new place. Everyone I spoke to had a fabulous dining experience: It was a huge success, and great fundraiser. Kudos to all those that supported the cause. I can't wait for the next "grand" event...

View of the Mill River.......

Have you ever spent time by the Mill River in Stamford? Yesterday I had the chance to dine at one of Stamford's newest little secrets--Rulu's River Cafe (26 Mill River St Stamford, (203) 325-3900. ) This delightful eatery is a classy little restaurant/bar that sits across the Mill River. Celebrating with a group of co-workers, we enjoyed a nice quiet lunch. We dined on, what else but, mostly salads. However, I had the crab cakes--which were super scrumptious! Yummy again. Quite a surprise, and a pleasant one indeed. What an enjoyable spot for lunch. The view of the river was relaxing and food and service was right on target. Rulu's won't be a secret for long.......

Pops in the Park Rain Venue

This was such a great event! I was kinda bummed that it was held indoors at first, but much to my surprise, the Palace was enchanting. Enjoying the music, and air conditioning, was refreshing. Preu was engaging and quite funny; not at all what you think of when you think "symphony." The familiar tunes took me back to my childhood, and all my fond memories. I am so looking forward to next week when the symphony plays out Broadway tunes. Let's hope it doesn't rain.

Enjoying the heat?

Yes, I am. I took a short stroll from the office at lunch time, with two co-workers, to a bustling little place called "Remo's Brick Oven Pizza Company" (35 Bedford). Nicely air-conditioned, we hurried inside. We were able to get one of the last two tables left. This place was flippin' pizzas! (although pastas, sandwiches, and salads adorned the menu as well) I chose the grilled chicken Caesar salad; yum-oh. Grilled perfectly. One friend had a tri-veggie pizza; artichokes, zucchini and peppers. Quite colorful. My other friend had a "make your own salad", which was filled with super fresh veggies. For dessert, we all shared a cannoli. Really creamy and delicious. A nice treat. Lunch at Remo's with my co-worker friends, good conversation and some excellent food is getting my week off to a good start...

Just a Friday night in the downtown.....

My husband and I thought we'd try Asian this past Friday night. Galangal was our choice. ( Located at 35 Atlantic Street) Along busy Atlantic street, we sat at a sidewalk table watching the passersby. I ordered an amazing seafood hot pot, not spicy, but hot, Thai-style soup. I would say that the food was pretty good. It was a quiet spot, but a good choice nonetheless.
It being a nice evening, my husband I decided to take short stroll to see what else was happening. We walked through Kwainis Park, and up lower Summer Street until we ran into the hustle bustle of Ferrante. As the owner, Lenny, stood outside greeting his patrons, we couldn't help but be drawn in by its charm. Although we had already eaten dinner, we decided that Ferrante would be a great place to enjoy a nice glass of Merlot. This place was full of energy. At the bar, we sat under a huge bouquet of fresh flowers, and enjoyed its aroma as well as an excellent glass of wine.
Afterwards, we headed over to the Pantry and Wine Shop at Napa (Broad Street) where Laura, the knowledgeable wine salesperson, recommended just the right bottle of wine to take home to top off our evening.
What a nice pleasant evening in Stamford Downtown to start off the summer......

Coolers not welcome @ Stamford concerts

Email this story

By Mark Ginocchio Staff Writer
Published June 20 2007
STAMFORD - Summer concertgoers are encouraged to bring their dancing shoes to Columbus Park when Alive @ Five returns this week, but they must leave their coolers at home.Citing a problem last summer with underage drinking and fake IDs, Downtown Special Service District officials said beverage coolers will be prohibited from the park this season as Sister Hazel kicks off the 12th annual Alive @ Five concert series at 5 p.m. tomorrow.

"Last year, people would bring their cooler bags, and then hand beer out to their underage friends," said Sandra Goldstein, executive director of the DSSD.The group collected more than 1,000 fake IDs over the six weeks of concerts last year, Goldstein said, "so this was the logical thing for us to do."The Parks and Recreation Commission approved the ban, which Stamford police support because it will help them with enforcement."Underage drinking is a concern of ours, and we certainly don't want it happening at Alive @ Five," Lt. Sean Cooney said. "It was becoming very difficult for us to enforce."During one show last year, police caught more than a dozen minors drinking, Cooney said. For tomorrow's show, checkpoints will be set up to collect cooler bags, Goldstein said. She expects some grumbling from concertgoers, but "we did some research and this is standard operating procedure," Goldstein said. This year's Alive @ Five is being promoted as the biggest yet. After Sister Hazel - which broke out in the mid-1990s with its hit "All For You" - performances will include the Neville Brothers, Colin Hay of Men at Work, the Subdudes, the New Cars featuring Todd Rundgren and the NYC Hit Squad. The series wraps up Aug. 9 with "American Pie" singer Don McLean.

It seems that Sundance is the place to be......

Went for lunch today with an old buddy pal from Darien. At first we were going to dine at Stamford Town Center. Well, not having much to choose from, we ventured out onto Broad Street. Lucky for us, we stumbled across Sundance Cafe. (right next to HSBC) Boy, was it hopping! It looks like the word is out on this new lunch time nook. With jazzy piano sounds playing, and comfy couches to lounge on, it was hard to go back to the office. All the sandwiches have real cutsie names; I had the "Darien" sandwich, and my friend had the "Shelton"--both were just super yummy. The "personalized" salad bar, where it is tossed to your pleasing, was quite popular. That will be my next choice, what'da think?

What's that I see? Tossed and Found sculpture?

Coming to work this morning, as I usually do, catching my eye was a BIG red sculpture at the edge of Latham Park @ Prospect Street.
It was a circle of striking red filing cabinets jetting out to the sky. The way they were put together left a huge a hole in the middle--just perfect to peek through. (I am not describing it as well as it looks, cause you'd have to see it to be really "wow'd". )

As I continued my morning journey, I noticed another. It was a giant sized girl, with crazy wild hair, holding cat in front of People's Bank on Bedford. Another "wow".

It seems like sculptures are popping up all over downtown! I plan to take a stroll at lunchtime to spy some more. How about you?

Lunch on Bedford

I gotta say, I don't get out of the office much, but yesterday I did. Lunch on Bedford Street is what it is all about. It was hustling and bustling with shoppers and people dining; really great. I met my friends at noon at Capricco's, an Italian cafe in the middle of the street. It was completely packed, with even a wait list 3 couples deep. We sat at a terrific outdoor table facing the street. It reminded me of Manhattan, only without all the pollution. As usual, Capricco's was a terrific lunch spot. Their food, always top notch. Tigin's, the Irish Pub next door, had been filled to the max too. I sat and chatted the hour away, while doing what I do best--people watch. It was such fun. Outdoor lunch on Bedford will be something I do more of in the future for sure......

Tossed and Found, Art in Public Places June through August, Stamford Downtown

This year Tossed and Found, Art in Public Places, presented by Heyman Properties in partnership with Stamford Town Center and produced by the Stamford Downtown Special Services District will feature 39 sculptures on loan to the City of Stamford by 24 gifted sculptors. From June to August these fine works of art will line the sidewalks and parks of the Downtown as well as the Stamford Town Center. The exhibit embraces each artist’s talent as he/she creates singular works of art from what once were very ordinary materials.

At the conclusion of the exhibit, many of the sculptures will be available for an online auction benefiting Autism Speaks. More details soon!
